Creativity to Bless (vs. Express)

Creativity is a powerful tool for self-expression, and an equally powerful way to bless others.

This is going to sound a bit ridiculous, but follow me here: we decorate our homes to our aesthetic, we cook our food to our taste, we draw, paint, or write music to express our idea, we sew a dress for ourself, or make clothes for our kids. How dare us!!! Just kidding. Obviously, none of this is bad.

But imagine if our use of creativity shifted to bless the people around us, in little and big ways.

Let’s zoom out a bit.

Consider creation’s daily works: the sunrise every morning, the stars at night, the shapes of tree branches.

Now consider her unexpected glories: when you look up and randomly see a vibrant rainbow reaching across the whole sky, or when you’re staring at the water and suddenly a dolphin jumps!

Creation is unexpected and grand, reliable and beautiful! All while reflecting her Good Maker who blesses us creatively in consistent and unexpected ways. The world around us is, simultaneously, God’s artistic expression of His character AND a rich blessing for us.

So, now, here’s my point: We have an opportunity to image God by blessing others with our creativity in the mundane and the massive.

Okay, are you amped!? I am!!! Let’s BLESS SOME PEOPLE!

I threw together some ideas to get your brain rolling:

Mundane:

  1. Doodle on your receipt for your waiter

  2. Load the mugs in the dishwasher to make a smiley face

  3. Draw on your friends dirty window

  4. Write a hiaku for a stranger

  5. Sing out loud in your home

  6. Write a letter to your friend in another state

  7. Leave a riddle by the coffee machine

Massive:

  1. Cook their favorite meal even though you’ve never tried it before

  2. Go all in on a niche gift, my friend Reiley once made me a deck of 52 hand drawn cards

  3. Sew a quilt for a baby, a personal favorite of mine

  4. Write a song for a friend

  5. Plan a party! My friend Alex has a real knack for this

  6. Make a piece of furniture specifically for their needs. In college, my roommate’s dad built us an entertainment system for our record player, board games, TV, and books

  7. Drop of an elaborate flower arrangement for your friend

You have the power to bless people with your creativity! It’s creative service, inspired selflessness, an entirely different kind of consideration.

You ready? Go in peace to creatively bless others.

Or let’s do it together.
